CustomError lets developers customize 404 or any error pages by simply uploading their own error pages (or error images), coded by hand or created in their favorite editor to a designated directory on their IIS Web server.

No administrator intervention is required. CustomError installs into the IIS properties dialog for each site.

Customizing error pages becomes a normal part of site design and development - providing a more integrated user experience and enhancing security by masking Web server-specific default error messages, an important part of defense-in-depth.

The main advantage of using CustomError is that one does not have to access the IIS server's Microsoft Management Console (MMC) interface in order to set up site-specific error pages.

CustomError's centralized 404-redirection rules file makes managing 404 redirected links a breeze. Dead, inbound links are becoming a bigger issue as Web sites and apps change, blogs point to content and then the links change, and search engine-marketing increases.

All that is required is to place a file named for the appropriate HTTP response code (such as 404.htm) in a designated directory (/errors by default) under the website's document root. This has the advantage of placing error page design and deployment directly in the hands of the people who build and maintain a website -- rather than having to rely on a server administrator.

CustomError comes pre-loaded with a library of error page templates and accommodates multiple libraries for multiple sites or virtual servers. Implemented as a super-fast ISAPI filter, the tool is easy to install and uninstall, and has a minimal server footprint.

CustomError is compatible with any popular scripting language, including ASP, ColdFusion, and Perl, and is designed to work seamlessly with other Port80 products like URLSpellCheck and PageXchanger.
