It helps you generate and track to do lists, print worksheets to record your search results, and plan research trips to libraries, court houses, etc.
For online research sites, GenSmarts produces links that already have your ancestors name and specifics embedded - making it much easier to perform online record lookups.
Most genealogy software is focused on helping you document what you know about your family. Unfortunately, that's just the tip of the iceberg... there's so much more that you don't know, of course. Aside from search engines and a couple of sites that help you find links between your family and others... there's not much out there that helps you do the legwork.
