URL rewriting is the process of intercepting an incoming Web request and automatically redirecting it to a different URL.
When performing URL rewriting, the URL being requested is checked against a set of rules defined in your web.config file and, if a matching rule is found, the request is redirected to a different URL.
For example, in the case where a website restructuring caused all of the Web pages in the /SharpTools directory to be moved to a /Products/SharpTools directory, you would want to use URL rewriting to check if a Web request was intended for a file in the /SharpTools directory, and if so, automatically redirect the user to the same file in the /Products/SharpTools directory instead.
ASP.NET URL Rewrite Handler lets rules to be defined as a simple replacement, or as a regular expression pattern that can use Regex groups and captures to create replaceable parameters based on the url pattern. Each rule may also be defined to stop on the first match, or continue processing in a "url filter pipeline" mode.
