There are so many Bioinformatics databases in the world and the number of data is increasing everyday. If we can utilize these databases easily, it will help us a lot. However, most of them are published on the Internet and we have to use browsers, such as Internet Explorer, to access them. It will be a tedious job because of the lack of the automatic search capability.
Perl has been used widely on Linux or FreeBSD to develop scripts to automate search process. That's why most researchers believe that it is necessary to learn Perl and setup Linux or FreeBSD machine if you want to use Bioinformatics. In fact, O'Reilly is publishing "Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics" or "Mastering Perl for Bioinformatics".
Why we have to learn programming to use Bioinformatics? Why we cannot use our PCs for Bioinformatics.
