PowerSearch is a tool that an be used to search multiple files for multiple search terms at the same time. This is a powerful concept since all the search programs we've seen are vastly limited in that they only search for one term at a time, or they are extremly complicated (and expensive) to use.

From the main screen presented when the program first starts, just point to the folder containing the files you want to search and provide a list of terms to search for. If you want so search for only one file, or a particular set of files, you can set the file mask.

For example, if the only file you wanted to search was called QWERTY.TXT, then you would type that into the file mask. If you wanted to search only the files that ended with .TXT, then you would type *.TXT in the file mask. When you provide the list of search terms to search for, you can either type them into the list in the area provided, or you can import the list from a text file. (Use of text files is a good idea if you search for the same terms again and again because you can make search term lists for future uses).

These features will probably be self-evident after using the program a few times. Nonetheless, to get you a jump start on some less obvious features built into the program ..

The results of your most recent search are saved to a file called FOUND.TXT. If you want to view, edit, or save it as another name, you have the opportunity to do so after the search process is complete, or you can select View Last Search Results from the File pull-down menu on the main screen.

When you exit the program, the list of terms to search for are saved to a file called TERMS.TXT. You can modify or save that file to another name using any editor (be sure to save it as text if using an editor that can save in multiple formats). If you do not want to have the list of search terms saved for you, just clear the list before exiting the program.

When the program is first started, it looks for the TERMS.TXT file and automatically loads it into the search terms list for you. If you do not want to use that list of terms, either delete the file before starting the program or just replace the list with a different list of terms after the program loads.

There are also options to show the line number or found text in the found results. If you are searching for just a few terms in a few files, the process will take just seconds to complete, regardless of whether or not you used these additional features. However, use of the options to show the text and/or line number where the search term was found can significantly slow the search process (since the program then has to search the files line by line for each term). If you have thousands of search terms and/or thousands of files, the process can go from being a 20 minute routine to one that may take a few hours -- again, depending on the number of terms and/or files you are searching for, the size of each file, and, of course, the speed of your computer.
